Sarape

Commercial Mural Franklin Neighborhood Development Corporatin 2026
This commercial mural was commissioned by the Franklin Neighborhood Development Corporation. When I visited the site, I also checked out a local shop across the street. I kept coming back to look at the sarape blankets, and they
ultimately solidified the inspiration for the design.
Originally a utilitarian garment worn for warmth and protection, sarapes developed distinct regional patterns and colors that could reflect place and identity. That connection to place is especially meaningful for Franklin Boulevard. A blanket carries a sense of familiarity, comfort, and protection, while the distinct visual language of the sarape can also speak to neighborhood identity and pride.
For the mural, I focused on the Saltillo sarape and its iconic central diamond, using the scale of the
wall to turn the textile into an oversized blanket draped across the wall. The folds and fringe help
give it a physical presence rather than treating the textile simply as a decorative pattern.
I chose to focus on one textile tradition to give the
Saltillo weaving more room to breathe, as well as creating a stronger composition at this scale.
