Pricing & Scope
How much does a mural cost?
Mural pricing varies significantly depending on:
-
size and scale
-
surface condition and prep
-
materials and process
-
level of design detail
-
travel, access, or crew needs
Mural projects have a $1,500 minimum, which reflects the time and care involved in design development, materials, and preparation, even for smaller-scale work.
Most murals fall within a general $35–$85 per square foot range, assuming a relatively straightforward design approach. Projects with a higher level of illustration, text, or extended design research & development are quoted individually to reflect the time and care involved in the design process.
We’ll discuss your specific project in detail during the proposal stage to determine the right approach and pricing.
What’s included in the price?
A benchmark mural price generally reflects the core components of a standard mural project, including:
-
one custom design with two rounds of revisions
-
my labor for painting
-
standard mural materials and supplies
-
installation, when applicable
-
my general liability insurance
This baseline assumes a relatively straightforward scope and site conditions.
What are some other costs?
Some projects involve are more involved. Additional factors are priced and outlined in advance. These may include:
-
wall preparation, repairs, cleaning, final sealant, or contractor work
(I’m happy to recommend trusted professionals in the Sacramento area) -
specialty materials such as Polytab
-
permitting fees
-
additional insurance requirements
-
equipment rentals (lifts, scaffolding, etc.)
-
assistant artists
-
travel expenses for out-of-area projects
-
commercial licensing rights
We’ll talk through these details early on so everything feels clear before moving forward.

Deposits & Payments
How does payment work?
Once we’ve talked through your project and scope, I’ll send a written proposal and contract outlining:
-
project details
-
timeline
-
pricing
To move forward, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required before any design work begins. This secures your project in my schedule and allows me to begin concept development with care and intention.
The remaining balance:
-
is due upon completion of the mural or installation
-
may be structured in phases for larger or more complex projects
-
will always be clearly outlined in advance
All payment terms are confirmed in writing before the project begins. I’m always happy to walk through the contract or payment structure if you have questions.
Why is a deposit required before design?
Design is a substantial part of the creative labor. The deposit ensures that time spent researching, sketching, and developing concepts is supported and that we’re aligned before moving into the creative phase.
Once the deposit is received:
-
the project is officially booked
-
design work begins
-
timelines are confirmed
This helps keep the process clear, respectful, and focused for everyone involved.

Creative Process
How does the design process work?
After we talk through your vision and context:
-
I’ll develop an initial digital concept design
-
We’ll refine the design together over 2 rounds of revisions, sometimes only 1 revision is necessary. For larger or more complex projects, there may be multiple review checkpoints
-
Once the design is approved, I’ll move into final artwork preparation
Will I have input?
Absolutely yes! Your input is an important part of the process. The design phase is intentionally collaborative and begins with in-depth conversations around your vision and goals of the project. From there, the design process includes two rounds of revisions to ensure everything feels aligned before moving forward.
This upfront clarity helps create a strong final design and minimizes the need for changes later in the process.
What will the mural look like?
Design concepts are developed digitally to illustrate composition, color direction, and overall approach. Once the mural moves into production, the work is painted by hand (either on site or in my studio) and translated into paint, scale, and surface.
As with any hand-painted artwork, brushstrokes, texture, and subtle color variation are part of the finished piece. The final mural follows the design as a roadmap and will ultimately reflect the character of the materials and the space itself. This results in a one-of-a-kind artwork rather than a printed or perfectly replicated image.

Polytab Murals
What is a Polytab mural?
A Polytab (or parachute cloth) mural is created on a durable, non-woven fabric in my studio and then installed on site using a professional adhesive system. This method has been in use since the 90s and allows the artwork to be fully hand-painted off-site before installation.
Polytab murals:
-
are painted entirely by hand
-
can be used indoors or outdoors
-
are sealed for durability and longevity
-
result in a permanent, site-specific mural
Why use Polytab?
Polytab is often a great solution for homes, finished interior and exterior environments where on-site painting would be disruptive or impractical.
This approach works well when:
-
painting the mural on-site is not an option
-
the design is highly detailed
-
hosting a community paint day
Because the artwork is painted in the studio, most of the time is spent off-site, while installation is efficient and typically completed within a few days.
Check out this residential Polytab mural here, or this community Polytab mural that included an off-site paint day here
Do Polytab murals look different?
Visually, Polytab murals retain the same hand-painted quality, brushwork, and texture as murals painted directly on the wall. The primary difference is the process.
You can expect:
-
slight seams where the Polytab panels meet & surface smoothness
-
brushstrokes and subtle variation that reflects the hand-painted nature of the work
-
a one-of-a-kind artwork designed specifically for the space
Polytab works best on smooth surfaces but can also be applied to brick, wood siding, and other lightly textured or dimensional surfaces.

Timeline & Logistics
How long does a mural take?
Timeline depends on:
-
scale of work
-
design complexity
-
site conditions
-
installation method (painted on site vs polytab)
Residential murals and straightforward installations are often completed within a few weeks from design to install. Larger or more complex projects take longer and are usually discussed in phases. We’ll talk timeline when we define scope.
Do you handle permits and coordination?
If your project requires city or property approval, I’m happy to help with coordination. Depending on the project type, clients may be responsible for:
-
permitting fees
-
property owner signatures
-
contractor coordination (if needed)
We talk through this in our early conversations so you know what’s covered.
How does scheduling work?
The project is officially scheduled once the deposit has been received. If the scope of work changes or additional time is needed beyond the original plan, the project timeline may need to shift and be rescheduled accordingly. In those cases, I’ll communicate clearly and work with you to determine next steps.

Set Parameters
I have a Set Budget or Timeline...
If you’re working within firm budget or timeline parameters, we can explore options for how the project may move forward. If it turns out that the scope, budget, or timing isn’t the right match, don’t be discouraged because I’m always happy to recommend another muralist who may better align with your needs. Either way, you’re welcome to reach out!
I need a design for project approval and fundraising...
Some larger projects need to begin with a completed design to support fundraising, grant applications, or stakeholder conversations. In these cases, we can start with a design-only scope and revisit the painting phase once funding is in place. I’m always happy to discuss pricing for design-only work based on the project’s needs.

Flexibility & Changes
Creative projects can evolve as they move forward. The notes below explain how changes are typically handled so expectations stay clear and the process stays smooth.
What if weather effects the timeline?
Exterior mural timelines can be affected by weather conditions such as rain or extreme temperatures. If weather impacts the schedule, we’ll adjust timing as needed to ensure the work is completed safely and with long-term durability in mind.
What happens if I change my mind?
Design changes can happen, and I want you to feel confident in the final outcome. After a design is approved, any changes outside the original scope are billed at $200/hour, which may include additional design time, materials, or repainting as needed. These costs are added to the final invoice due upon completion and the project timeline may need to be adjusted.
You’re also welcome to continue with the approved scope as-is, or to cancel the project, in which case the 50% deposit is retained.

Specialty
Do you create community murals or paint-day events?
Yes! I work with groups of all sizes that want collaborative community murals and paint days.
These projects involve additional planning for engagement, design, facilitation, and logistics. Because they are different in scope and require coordination, they’re quoted individually and discussed as part of the project proposal.
Check out an intimate paint day project here and a city-wide paint day here
What if my space is unusual or has built-in features?
Many mural projects involve unique spaces such as bars, alcoves, or areas with built-in features. These considerations are taken into account during both the design and installation process so the final piece feels intentional and integrated into the space.
In some cases, using a Polytab installation allows the artwork to be painted in my studio (including with materials like spray paint) and then installed on site in environments where on-site painting wouldn’t be practical or appropriate. This approach offers flexibility while maintaining a high level of detail and finish.
Check out an example of a polytab mural that illustrates this situation here
Can I use the mural image elsewhere?
I retain the copyright to my artwork. Clients are welcome to photograph and share the finished mural for project documentation and promotion, including on their website and social media.
If you anticipate using the mural for commercial use such as for branding, advertising, or merchandise, I offer licensing options at various price points. These are always discussed in advance so expectations are clear before moving forward.
